MISSION STATEMENT

SILENT VOICES SPEAK started out as Silent Voices: A Writer’s Workshop, as the first group at the drop-in center at the Broadway location of Community Counseling Centers of Chicago, whose purpose is to empower it’s attendees to form and attend their own groups.

We have branched out as an independent entity. We are silent no more. We say yes to the creative possibilities of life & art...

The mission of SILENT VOICES SPEAK is to give a voice to people who are disenfranchised. Many of the participants in SILENT VOICES SPEAK are also visual and/or performing artists.

Membership is open to all.

SIRENS FLY BY DAY AND NIGHT-Kelly Greenwood

Sirens fly by day and night
all the seniors in the highest rise
watch the Lake reach forward
then sink back and swallow itself again.
There is no happier sunrise,
no better surprise,
than the full mood of the full moon's tide
often times, it feels like I'm wasting time.
Trying to condense all the finest points
gun violence gone domestic,
watching as crack, heroin, poverty
continue to decimate the South and West sides.
It's like a modern day Holocaust
people are feeding off each other
just to stay alive,
the kids on the streets at night
thinking the poison they sell will save their lives.
You stare at a blank wall long enough
you start to go crazy
think of how it must feel
to walk through empty fields where homes once stood
dodging bullets just to get a sub-par education
in a system that's set up for failure
systematically a people are being destroyed by the dozens,
covert population control
leading them like sheep
down the path to nowhere that leads to jail,
the illusion created by gangs
the false sense of security and parental replacement
the love they never got, the money they never had,
makes it difficult to see the light
at the end of a non-existent tunnel.
If your train has derailed
get off and walk- better yet, RUN,
run like the wind,
and hope the long arm of the law
isn't the noose you've been running towards,
hope it doesn't slam you head first into
the darkened lamp post of the midnight jungle,
face first, face down- concrete
until you are just another statistic,
a modern day slave.
There are more Blacks in the American prison system today
than there were slaves in the 1800's.
(isn't that fucked up?)
Justice is a blind eye with a patch on it,
greasy palms and sticky fingers,
runny noses and itchy triggers,
the white man has ruined the black man
with subliminal messages in fast food and liquor, pawn shops,
welfare and government checks,
locked them up in high-rise cages
in hopes that maybe they'll just
destroy themselves,
that they'll all kill each other
so we can shut off the ventilator,
close the curtain, sweep it under the rug
and whitewash history one more time.
The truth only comes when it's already too late.
My heart aches,
my heart breaks
to know the inside secrets
of a supposed first-class city.
It's hard to be proud to claim allegiance
to a corrupt government
even on such a microscopic level.
A windblown city with lead on it's shoulders
she walks stooped behind the glossy finish of the exterior...
it hurts just looking
and it hurts to know that I'm in love
with something I can not fix.
I struggle to find the balance
in my world of fledgling privilege,
in the confusion, the chaos
the police of Great Divide,
to let the outsiders know that
there does exist a Chicago out there
beyond the invisible safety net of the city's North side.

LATELY I'VE BEEN ANNOYED by Kelly Greenwood

Lately I've been annoyed by the
duplex simplicity
the abject complicity
the stale universal tale
of uniformed eccentricity
caught up in a tidal wave of reciprocity
the fog, the secrets, the life that I've lived
I'm sticking to my guns
my gun's filled with glue
'cause the irritation induced
largely comes from you
Written at the bottom of the cancelled checks
the ones written by a mouth
who's ass couldn't cash
is a memo of a memory
of a not so distant past
It's time for the light to shine
to harness the gift, the pressure
the wilderness of sexual energy
channeled into theory
that becomes a reality
living, breathing, twisting
I'm flying down the alley
under strict supervision
If I get this right
remind me to hit the delete button
trade in excess
for a more meaningful set of instructions
reduce what I meant
to the lowest common denominator
see what had happened was,
I used to be an astronomer
Palms up fortunes get told
the sticky substance
that together the body and soul hold
natural high in a dream
of technicolor highlights
running mad like a stray cat
in the city that runs it's mouth at night
Your secrets safe with me
'long as i don't find out
the truth is open to interpretation
silence erupts into fascination
I for one am far removed
from this optimist constellation
mind's gone on permanent vacation
Excuse me while I make this awkward introduction,
but I hope you enjoyed the unnecessary interruption.

THERE WAS A TIME by Kelly Greenwood

There was a time
nine galaxies away
I was conceived of a notion
dropped down in the ocean
licking the salt off pavement
powerful like flames
I used to wonder
about such occurrences
as such currencies
rendered my past invisible,
shading blended into the outline...
In this dimension
I'm like a cartoon character
against the 3D backdrop
like Jessica Rabbit
in a world of bullets and desire
sometimes feels like fire
There was a time
when it was all relative
but it was no relative of mine
my eyes journey some more
scan the horizon
blink back tears
cover my eyes like a caul
but I am not afraid of fear
When I dream
I am all that I seem
and if this seems like something you've seen
I'll be glad to pick up the pieces and leave
set aside time to reconvene
If my page is limited
I can't explain why
but sometimes it's all part of the process
I feel eyes watching as they pass on by
and usually I'm the watcher
feeling like a spy
chasing fantasy in the darkest of night
The eye inside
it dilates, it gyrates
it goes against the grain
the sandman's train
feel the pull
feel the strain
a magical thunderstorm
pelting like rain
I promise the only thing you'll feel
is the absence of pain

ANGER IN MY FISSURES by Elizabeth Hipwell

I lug my anger in the fissures of my hips,
Thighs and stomach
Tightly stuck in the rolling
Bumpy hillsides of my flesh
Missed my opportunity to venture saying
“This is wrong.
You hurt me;
You invaded my most precious self.
How dare you!!
I deserve veneration.”
I am weary of carrying
The weight of your depravities.
This is a load I can no longer grip
Against my physique,
Inserted into the narrows of my psyche
With the illusion that I control
Everything and everyone around me…
I clutch this delusion
To save my sanity.

Facing The Storm by Sharon H.

I'm Bleeding
within
my body, my heart,
through the eyes of
Pain and Fear
not much is clear.
Trying to Survive
get through another day,
trying to be
Strong
when all I really long
is to be held,
sat with, through
whatever storms
that surround me.
Through the pouring rains
of tears, the
blustery winds and thunder
of anger and frustration,
the fear that fills the sky
with lightning strikes.
To know there is safety
comfort
no matter
the storms that lay ahead.
To Breathe...Deep
into my core
and Trust that
when the Final Storm
with its Ferocious
Destruction
is staring me down-
I will be okay...
even in my demise...
because I will know,
through to the end-
I am not alone.

"LORDS OF THE WILD" by Jackie L. Tajiri

Do not bore me
With tales and images
Of your children and grandchildren,
Nay!
My voice sings the praises
Of creatures of Earth and sky,
Of rain forests and deserts;
The non-humans,
Furred, feathered, finned
And scaled;
They are my brothers and sisters,
Sons and daughters;
Heed the wise mantis,
The meow of the cat,
Do you not hear their cries?
Up in the trees,
Under the ground,
Above the ground,
Birds, bats and insects,
They rule the air!
Fish and whales,
The sea!
Man is but a subject
In the Kingdom of the wild;
To their squawks, roars and howls,
Humankind is deaf;
To the beauty above,
Below and all around,
Homosapiens are blind,
Upon this Earth,
Mortal man limps to his doom;
His so-called wisdom is washed away
In this tide.

"BE STILL" by Jackie L. Tajiri

"Be still and know that I am God,
Said the Mongoose to the Evil Serpent,

"Harm not the innocent,
Lest I devour thee,"
By this saying,
The Evil Serpent was startled!
Quick as lightening,
The Evil Serpent opened wide
Its savage jaws,
The Mongoose beheld its Enemy's venomous fangs,
But, lo!
The Mongoose was faster still,
Biting! Tearing! Stomping fiercely!
It was mammal versus reptile;
This day,
Triumph belonged to the Mongoose,
By the jaws of its opponent,
The Evil Serpent was dispatched
To the belly of its foe.
