MISSION STATEMENT

SILENT VOICES SPEAK started out as Silent Voices: A Writer’s Workshop, as the first group at the drop-in center at the Broadway location of Community Counseling Centers of Chicago, whose purpose is to empower it’s attendees to form and attend their own groups.

We have branched out as an independent entity. We are silent no more. We say yes to the creative possibilities of life & art...

The mission of SILENT VOICES SPEAK is to give a voice to people who are disenfranchised. Many of the participants in SILENT VOICES SPEAK are also visual and/or performing artists.

Membership is open to all.

Bugger Me

by Kathy Powers
Bugger me you buggerers
When I’m not around.
Tell me all your nasty things
When I can’t be found.
Sing me songs of ugliness
When my ears are plugged.
Drink to all my loneliness
When I’m being hugged
If you do these things for me
Then I’ll strike you back;
I’ll ignore your pleas for happiness
When your hour’s most black.

A win, win, win, solution:

Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border. Take the dirt, raise the levies in New Orleans, and put the Florida alligators in the moat.

Are there any other problems you would like for me to solve?

Blizzard Time

Gangway!
'Tis not the grey day
When listen I some hearsay
Announcing data doomsday!
Neigh, not today
I say, I pray...
Okay, I'll do an exposé
Old label files, my prey:
Elusively stray,
Surely not cast away;
Lost causes, passé.
Ole! I convey
Touche! I slay
Today we play;
Triumphant data-hunt essay:
A holiday.

Another Victim

Another Victim
I am not the terrorist;
I condone not this war and others;
I voted not for our pretender president;
I can change not these events.
I protest until my breath disintegrates.
I support full my country;
I decry its sins;
I mourn the casualties.
I grieve my impotence because
I am the terrorized.

Falling Pages

Wow!

Mom, you sustain me.
I withdraw hope from your reservoir.
You energize me.

As my life teacher,
You share your financial wizardry
In our strategic planning sessions.

You share your soul searches by
Confiding in me and sharing secrets.
We comfort each other.

You defend my dignity as
John’s greatest promoter.
You lead me staunchly down time’s hazy corridor.

Wow!
