MISSION STATEMENT

SILENT VOICES SPEAK started out as Silent Voices: A Writer’s Workshop, as the first group at the drop-in center at the Broadway location of Community Counseling Centers of Chicago, whose purpose is to empower it’s attendees to form and attend their own groups.

We have branched out as an independent entity. We are silent no more. We say yes to the creative possibilities of life & art...

The mission of SILENT VOICES SPEAK is to give a voice to people who are disenfranchised. Many of the participants in SILENT VOICES SPEAK are also visual and/or performing artists.

Membership is open to all.

THERE WAS A TIME by Kelly Greenwood

There was a time
nine galaxies away
I was conceived of a notion
dropped down in the ocean
licking the salt off pavement
powerful like flames
I used to wonder
about such occurrences
as such currencies
rendered my past invisible,
shading blended into the outline...
In this dimension
I'm like a cartoon character
against the 3D backdrop
like Jessica Rabbit
in a world of bullets and desire
sometimes feels like fire
There was a time
when it was all relative
but it was no relative of mine
my eyes journey some more
scan the horizon
blink back tears
cover my eyes like a caul
but I am not afraid of fear
When I dream
I am all that I seem
and if this seems like something you've seen
I'll be glad to pick up the pieces and leave
set aside time to reconvene
If my page is limited
I can't explain why
but sometimes it's all part of the process
I feel eyes watching as they pass on by
and usually I'm the watcher
feeling like a spy
chasing fantasy in the darkest of night
The eye inside
it dilates, it gyrates
it goes against the grain
the sandman's train
feel the pull
feel the strain
a magical thunderstorm
pelting like rain
I promise the only thing you'll feel
is the absence of pain
